Rotator cuff, or more commonly known as Frozen shoulder is becoming more and more visible among clients.
Symptoms:
Clients will feel the shoulder movement starts with restricted move ability which most of the times follows a sharp pain in the shoulder. These symptoms are more common among clients who gym excessively without warming up and / or warming down.
The ligaments within the shoulder start tearing when there is excessive movement (especially with weights) placed on that particular part of the shoulder.
In severe cases it can restrict your move-ability of the shoulder to such a degree where you battle lifting or raising your arm. E.g: you are getting dressed for work and suddenly you get a sharp pain right on top of your shoulder, to an extent where you cannot lift it as high as you used to.
I therefore urge clients to always stretch your muscles (regardless of what type of training you will be doing) before and after your training. Whether it be; cross-fit, gym, running, iron-man, golf, jogging, squash etc.
*Please note running / walking on the treadmill does not count as stretching*.
There are other ways of treating this as a "quick fix" which is to go for a cortisone injection, but there are 2 (two) factors involved here.
1) you are only permitted 2 (two) injections in a 12-month period.
2) this does not treat the cause; it only relieves the symptom for a period.
If you suffer from frozen shoulder or are in doubt if you have frozen shoulder, please get in touch with me as soon as possible, as this (if not addressed in time) WILL set you back on training and restrict your move-ability.
I have treated numerous clients in the 20 years of practice, and I agree it is extremely unpleasant to work with, but there are no short cuts and the results speak for itself.
